A film like Josh Cooley's Transformers One comes out right when you're ready to give up on stories that keep packaging the same properties that have been trademarked. As implied by its quietly self-assured title, it presents itself as though no Transformers film had ever been produced. Cooley achieved the unexpected feat of finding new things to say about very familiar franchise characters in Toy Story 4. He does the same here, crafting an elaborate backstory for characters who, despite their considerable charm, were never known for a rich sense of history and psychological depth. It's fun to imagine an alternate universe where no one knows anything about these characters, much less that a galaxy-wide war between the Decepticons and Autobots will eventually take place. That way, people might be shocked and impressed to see the central characters become the robot counterparts of the brothers who faced each other on the battlefield during the Civil War. The effect would likely be similar to watching a Star Wars prequel without knowing that best friends Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker end up on opposite sides of the Force.

Naturally, Decepticon and Optimus Prime are the characters mentioned here. Orion Pax and D-16 are shown as two lonely losers. On the planet Cybertron, where sentient robots are separated into two social classes those with transformation cogs, sometimes known as t-cogs, and those without—Orion Pax and D-16 are miners. In essence, those without are slaves who mine Energon, the food and fuel that powers the robots. The planet's loss of the legendary Matrix of Leadership is the cause of all this mining. Jupiter Paxton grows to believe that saving it with his friend D-16 will not only end the necessity for slave labor but also enable the disadvantaged underclass to rise and become something else.
